EFFECTS OF DESIGN STUDIO CULTURE ON PERFORMANCE OF ARCHITECTURE STUDENTS

Architectural education will not be complete without due reference to its studio culture; because of its effects on the students’ performances especially in their design studio course. This paper examines the effect of architectural design studio culture on students’ performance in design studio courses. The study conducted a survey through the use of questionnaires which were administered in three schools: Covenant University, Bells University of Technology both in Ota, Ogun State and the University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos, all in Nigeria. Twelve main behaviors, patterns and habits of design studio culture were identified in contrast to the five already identified in the reviewed literature. Out of these factors, only four affected the performance of architecture students. The study recommends the need for architecture schools to focus more on these influential factors as they affect students’ performances. Key words: Architecture, Architecture student, Design studio, Studio culture, Student performance
